ISO 45001 standard, presentation part 1
ISO 45001 is the benchmark standard in occupational safety and health. It was adopted in 2018 by ISO.
This standard was preceded by the OHSAS 18001 standard from the British Standards agency. This standard was used from 1999 to 2008 and was withdrawn following the publication of 45001.
An organization (an organization) is responsible for the safety and health of its workers, as well as those affected by its activities. It must provide safe workplaces and good sanitary conditions.
The objective of an occupational safety and health management system (OSHMS) is to manage risks, improve OSH performance and meet legal and regulatory requirements.
The success of an OSH management system (SMSST) depends on certain key factors such as:
Management leadership.
promoting an OHS culture.
worker participation.
allocating the necessary resources.
the hazard identification process.
OSH policy.
The implementation of the ISO 45001 standard can reassure employees and interested parties about the start of an effective work safety system.
The extent of the need for documented information to ensure the success of the OHSSM will depend mainly on the context of the organization and the nature of the activities.
The approach for the management system to be implemented is based on the concept of PDCA (PLan Do Check Act). PDCA can be applied to planning to set goals, how to implement processes and also for action and decision making.
The content of the standard conforms to the High Level Structure defined by ISO. The elements of the standard can therefore be integrated into other management systems such as a complete QSE system.
An organization wishing to demonstrate the compliance of its OSHMS with the standard can carry out a self-assessment or request certification from an outside organization.
Chapters 1 to 3 of the standard give the scope and the applicable definitions.
Chapters 4 to 10 explain the compliance requirements.
Note that the verb form “should” indicates a recommendation, not a requirement.
Similarly, a note constitutes an orientation.
Chapter 1: Purpose and scope
The standard gives requirements for an OSH management system intended to prevent injuries and deterioration of workers’ health.
It is applicable to any organization that seeks to eliminate dangers and reduce risks.
It also helps any organization to achieve expected results, such as compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
It applies to any organism, whatever its size. It allows integration of other elements if necessary such as the well-being of workers. It does not cover other topics like product safety.
To obtain a declaration of conformity of the SST system with the standard, all the requirements must be addressed without exclusion.
